| One of the most important things that my CS courses at Berkeley taught me was that I should document my life. With people like Devang constantly on the prawl, I am reluctant to reveal too many details. But hey, this way I'll be immortal.
What has happened since my internship with Intel? I decided that Intel isn't for me. I am working for a Navy R&D lab. Yes, in true Simpsons tradition, "yvan eht nioj." (who knew that subliminal messaging could be so powerful). I really like it--and for those people who don't think that government compensation is good-- keep this in mind, for the next several years, my salary raises are almost guaranteed (by the end of this month, my salary will be increased 20%), and when I retire, the government will pay me $100k a year just for breathing (I wouldn't even have to do it on my own--so morbid).
Working at the Navy is so great. I get every other friday off. If i choose to go to grad school, they'll pay me 40k on top of paying for my education. I get to ride warships, meet foreign diplomats, visit embassies, travel all around the country, and around the world. Within the last two months, I have travelled to Paris (figure1), Las Vegas, Boston, and soon I will be going to Hawaii.

My boss also let me choose any laptop that I wanted so I can travel. I chose the sony vaio sz270p/c. OMG it's SO beautiful. With its black carbon chassis and two graphics cards--one of which is the NVIDIA GeForce 7400-- I will challenge ANY gamer. Did I mention it also has a Duo core processor?
Beyond the materialistic aspect, one thing that I definately like about my job is that your potential is only upper bounded by your initiative. That is so empowering. Of course, on the other hand, if you do choose to slack off, your job will be easy but boring.
I will say that my preference for socal was a primary reason I had chosen to rebuke two offers from Intel. When I was attending Berkeley, I didn't truly appreciate the environment there. Now, I miss the many friends I left behind in norcal, and that and wanting to continue my education, would be the only two reasons I would go back. I was all ready to buy a condo in San Diego, but because of these doubts, I think I'm going to wait on that decision. In the meantime, it's San Francisco for July 4th! For those of you who I'm visiting, don't bother to go watch the fireworks. I'll light up your night *wink*. |
